HOW YOU CAN HELP
Join us in the fight against food waste by conducting regular waste audits and partnering with local food banks. Together, we can create a more sustainable food system and make
a positive impact in our communities!
UNFI partners with organizations like the Rhode Island Food Bank to donate edible, yet unsellable food.
Food waste is an ongoing challenge in the grocery industry. At UNFI, we continuously assess our efforts to reduce food waste, as highlighted in our FY23 Better for All Report.
Audits: Our waste audits help us understand the percentage of food waste going to landfills that could be salvaged, leading us to find more ways to reduce damages in our warehouse.
Partnership: In FY23, UNFI collaborated with the USDA’s Food Loss and Waste Liaison to discuss strategies and initiatives for reducing food waste, aiming to align our efforts with national goals.
Donating Food: We partner with Feeding America, the largest hunger- relief organization in the U.S., to donate to regional food banks nationwide. Our distribution centers also establish local partnerships with food banks and pantries that address hunger.
